EDC Case

Your Nomad Forge EDC Node kit includes everything you need to get started:
- Heltec V4 LoRa Module - Pre-installed in custom 3D-printed case with "NOMAD FORGE" branding
- 915MHz Antenna - High-gain antenna optimized for North American frequencies
- Mounting Screws (2x) - For secure case assembly
- Battery Wedge - Ensures proper fit when using unprotected 18650 cells
Note: This node requires one 18650 lithium battery (not included). See battery recommendations below.

Step 1: Opening the Case

Locate the two small slots on the side of the case. Using a small flathead screwdriver, gently pry open the case tabs. The case is designed to snap apart easily without forcing.
Tip: Work slowly and alternate between both tabs to avoid putting stress on one side.
Note: This unit includes optional GPS hardware for precise location tracking and enhanced mesh network functionality.

Step 2: Attach the Antenna

⚠️ CRITICAL: Complete this step BEFORE inserting battery or powering on the device.
Thread the 915MHz antenna onto the gold SMA connector at the top of the unit. Hand-tighten until snug - you should feel resistance when properly seated. Do not over-tighten.
Why this matters: Operating the LoRa radio without an antenna attached will cause immediate and permanent damage to the radio module. Always attach antenna first.

Step 3: Install Battery
Image: Open case showing battery compartment
Insert one 18650 battery with positive (+) terminal facing up.
Using unprotected cells? Place the battery wedge (small black piece) in the cradle first for a secure fit.
Using protected cells? Skip the wedge - protected cells fit snugly on their own.
Installation tips:
- The battery cradle is intentionally tight for secure contact
- You may need to gently adjust the cradle tabs if the battery doesn't slide in smoothly
- Once inserted, push the battery up slightly until it makes firm contact with the positive terminal on the board
- You should feel the spring-loaded contact compress slightly
Recommended batteries: Samsung 30Q, Samsung 25R, LG HG2, or any high quality protected 18650.

Step 4: Close and Secure the Case
Image: Hands holding case with battery installed, antenna attached, ready to close
With the battery properly seated and pushed up to contact the positive terminal, you're ready to close the case.
To close:
- Start with the right side - align the right edge of the case first (the side with the hinge-like connection)
- Once the right side is seated, press the left side down firmly until you hear the tabs click into place
- Insert the two screws into the mounting holes and tighten gently
- Do not over-tighten - the screws should be snug but not forced
Visual check before closing:
- Antenna is attached and hand-tight
- Battery is seated with positive terminal facing up and making contact
- No wires are pinched between case halves
Your EDC Node is now ready for initial setup and configuration!
Next Steps
Now that your node is assembled, you'll need to configure it using the Meshtastic app.
